Green Series

THE UK’S FIRST GREEN COMPACT

Using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel and is supported

by an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration.

Designed With The
Future In Mind

Stelrad is offering the first UK manufactured low carbon-emissions steel radiators, using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, supported by an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration.

Stelrad customers can choose a Green Compact radiator range that contributes directly to a reduction in atmospheric COâ‚‚ emissions today and accelerates decarbonisation in the future.

With sustainability a primary focus here at Stelrad, we know that our customers are also continuously looking for sustainable products for their homes and buildings.

The Stelrad Green Series is the next step in our commitment to provide greener radiators, helping our customers to contribute directly to reducing atmospheric COâ‚‚. This range will help to ensure homes across the UK can be powered by radiators made with greener steel.

Why should I buy a Stelrad Green Compact?

  • The Green Compact comes with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). An EPD transparently reports objective, comparable and third-party verified data about products’ environmental performance over the lifecycle of the radiator. This guarantees a thorough and verifiable declaration in line with the ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards for environmental labels and declarations.
  • The steel utilised in the manufacture of these Green Compact radiators is XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, which is made in an electric arc furnace with high recycled content and 100% renewable electricity.
  • XCarb® brings together ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, as well as wider initiatives and green innovation projects, into a single effort focused on achieving demonstrable progress towards net zero steel.
  • All the electricity comes from renewable sources (assured via ‘Guarantee of origin’) and the steel is manufactured using very high levels of scrap steel.
  • Radiators are 100% recyclable, with zero plastic used for the outer packaging.
  • Scope 3 emissions are estimated to account for c.95% of the total emissions related to Stelrad’s products. Furthermore, the purchase of steel accounts for c.72% of total emissions. Clearly, decarbonisation of the steel supply chain is vital for Stelrad’s own supply chain, and increasing purchases of low carbon steel, such as XCarb®, is a concrete way of investing in the decarbonisation of steel, whilst contributing to immediate reductions in Stelrad’s Scope 3 emissions.

How much COâ‚‚ is being saved per radiator?

  • By using high levels of scrap steel and 100% renewable electricity, XCarb® recycled and renewably produced cold-rolled steel has a COâ‚‚ footprint of approximately 800kg of COâ‚‚e per tonne of finished steel. This is a 66% reduction compared with the same product made via the conventional steelmaking route.
  • A typical 8 radiator household fitted with Green Compacts saves the equivalent of taking a typical family car off the road for 1200 miles.
  • Enabling Stelrad to meet Scope 3 targets and declare low-embodied-COâ‚‚ products.

There are 60 horizontal models to choose from, which can be identified by the Green Series branding.

Low Carbon-Emissions Steel Radiators

The Green Compact is manufactured using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced cold-rolled steel.  XCarb® is the brand name for ArcelorMittal’s ongoing global programme of steelmaking innovation targeted at carbon-neutral steel by 2050.

The XCarb® steel certificates are issued and officially passes the CO2 savings achieved by ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products to Stelrad and are based on CO2 savings which have been assured by DNV, an independent body. The savings are calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for Project Accounting.

Enabling Stelrad to report a corresponding reduction in their Scope 3 CO2 emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.

Reducing Scope 3 Emissions

  • When discussing CO2 emissions, there is a common distinction drawn between Scope 1 & 2 emissions, which are directly related to Stelrad’s energy usage, and Scope 3 emissions, which are released within the supply chain of Stelrad’s products and are often not under Stelrad’s direct control. Stelrad already has excellent control of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with Stelrad UK reducing these by 32% in 2022 compared to 2021.
  • This was achieved through a combination of reducing our overall energy usage and increasing our use of renewable energy through, for example, through a number of energy improvement processes. However, Scope 3 emissions are estimated to account for c.95% of the total emissions related to Stelrad’s products.
  • Furthermore, the purchase of steel accounts for c.72% of total emissions. Clearly, decarbonisation of the steel supply chain is vital for Stelrad’s own supply chain, and increasing purchases of Carbon Lite is a concrete way of investing in the decarbonisation of steel, whilst contributing to immediate reductions in Stelrad’s Scope 3 emissions.

Zero plastic will be used for the outer packaging

  • Stelrad are already improving the packaging across all products and all panel radiators are currently shrink wrapped with plastic made from 30% recycled plastic. However, for the Green Series the plastic has completely been removed and the new Green Compact is transported within cardboard and paper only.
  • The Stelrad Green Compact is safely secured within a sturdy cardboard box rather than shrink wrapped with plastic corner protectors. It’s high gloss paint finish is protected inside the box by tissue paper to reduce movement and avoid scratches, and the fixing kit has been switched from a plastic bag to a small envelopebox.
  • These packaging materials are entirely reusable or recyclable by the customer so there is also less packaging waste.
